Wellness Wednesday with Lauren
Many people think that muscles are merely a tissue with the capacity to lift, push and pull, and of course to show off a strong toned body. But muscles play so many other important roles in your life and anti-aging processes. Maintaining muscle is one of the most important aspects of long-term health and longevity.
I’m sure you have heard the phrase, “muscle burns fat.” This might be a little confusing to you however, so let me explain it to you in layman’s terms. Your body naturally burns more calories each day to maintain a pound of muscle than it does to maintain a pound of fat. This means that gaining muscle can help to increase your metabolism and has the potential to help you “burn” calories and fat. One pound of muscle burns approximately 5-6 calories per day at rest. In comparison, a pound of fat burns about two calories per day. So let’s say you are 150 pounds, and you have 110 pounds of lean muscle, this means you would burn 660 calories at rest just to maintain your muscle. Not to mention the other calories you are burning at rest just to stay alive, such as digestion and cardiovascular systems. Take that same 150 pound person, and now they just have 80 pounds of lean muscle on them, they would only burn 480 calories at rest to maintain their mature muscle. So with that being said, muscle is more metabolically active than fat. While it’s not the miracle fat-burner that many might hope it to be, strengthening muscle can help you lose weight.
When trying to age gracefully, weight is not the end-all-be-all. Not only do we want to look our best, we want to feel our best! And really, adding muscle as a way to burn more calories is missing the point. Yes, strength training can help you burn calories, but it can also; strengthen your cardiovascular system, improve cognitive function, improve bone density and less joint pain, reduce stress and depression, allow you to do your daily activities easier, boost energy levels, improve quality of sleep, decrease anxiety, and improve self-esteem.
